Many blame the election of Lincoln as the catalyst that started the war. The Republicans were considered by the southerners as nationalists industrialists that were against trade and states rights. The Republicans were against the expansion of slavery as an institution both morally and politically. The fact that Lincoln was fortifying Fort Sumter in South Carolina infuriated the Rebels into action.
