On sims 2 pets for the PC how do you adopt a stray animal?

I have sims 2 pets expansion pack on my computer. Pets will randomly walk past my house, and i assume they have no owner. How do I make them one of my pets, and no longer a stray?

dKramer 		To make a stray a pet, you must befriend the animal until the option becomes available. Doing social interactions such as "Stroke", "Feed Treat" and "Hug".

Johnny 		Well, to adopt them, you need to have such a high relationship with them. Just interact with them until the relationship meter is high enough. When the meter is high, a new option, "adopt (pet's name)" will pop out.
