When you buy a dog represented as "AKC-registrable," you will receive an AKC Dog Registration application, filled out by the seller
Be wary of excuses such as "AKC hasn't sent the papers yet." The AKC Dog Registration Form should be available at the time you pick up your puppy. If not, wait until the breeder receives it before you pay for and take home the pup.
The AKC is the only purebred dog registry which conducts kennel inspections to ensure the proper care and conditions of AKC-registered dogs. Make sure your new puppy's registration and papers have the official AKC seal.
AKC does not accept registrations from most other domestic registries, so don't assume that you can transfer your dog's registration to AKC after buying the dog.
Buyers should look for AKC registration, the only registry that offers the services, events and commitment to purebred dogs that buyers—and their canine companions—deserve.

Never buy from a Pet Shop.

If you buy a puppy from a Pet Store, you have missed the entire point of this site. You don't get to see the parents, you learn nothing about the conditions of the kennels, and you don't get to question the breeders. In short, you are supporting the Puppy Mill industry. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!

See both parents of the puppy.

When you visit a breeder, ask a lot of questions.

Attend or watch a dog show.

Get and read a book about your chosen breed before you buy a puppy.

Learn the breed standards for the breed you have chosen.

Consider other breeds in the same group.

Don't buy around Christmas or Easter.

Get a vet checkup for the puppy immediately after you buy it.

Get a contract with a refund for health issues.

Get your papers before you leave with the puppy.

Take someone emotionally uninvolved with you to see the puppy.

Don't buy from the first one or two breeders you visit.

Don't buy a puppy without planning.

Buy from a breeder who has only one breed.

Decide beforehand whether you want full or limited breeding rights.

Visit a breeder before he has puppies ready to sell.
